ComfyUI-Copilot LMStudio Integration - Implementation Summary

Changes Made

Backend Changes

1. Updated backend/utils/globals.py

  • Added LMSTUDIO_DEFAULT_BASE_URL = "http://localhost:1234/v1"
  • Added is_lmstudio_url() function to detect LMStudio URLs based on common patterns:
    • localhost:1234
    • 127.0.0.1:1234
    • 0.0.0.0:1234
    • :1234/v1
    • localhost/v1
    • 127.0.0.1/v1

2. Updated backend/controller/llm_api.py

  • Modified list_models() function to handle LMStudio:
    • Only includes Authorization header if not LMStudio OR if LMStudio has API key
    • LMStudio typically doesn't require API keys
  • Updated verify_openai_key() function:
    • Renamed to be more generic (still supports OpenAI but also LMStudio)
    • Added LMStudio detection logic
    • Different success/error messages for LMStudio vs OpenAI
    • API key optional for LMStudio connections

3. Updated backend/agent_factory.py

  • Modified create_agent() function:
    • Added LMStudio detection
    • Uses placeholder API key ("lmstudio-local") when LMStudio detected and no key provided
    • Reorganized configuration logic for better clarity

Frontend Changes

4. Updated ui/src/components/chat/ApiKeyModal.tsx

  • Enhanced UI with LMStudio-specific hints:
    • Updated placeholder text to mention LMStudio
    • Added helpful tooltip about LMStudio configuration
    • Modified verification logic to handle LMStudio URLs
    • Removed API key requirement for LMStudio verification
    • Better success/error messages for LMStudio connections

Documentation

5. Created LMSTUDIO_SETUP.md

  • Comprehensive setup guide for LMStudio integration
  • Step-by-step installation and configuration instructions
  • Troubleshooting section
  • Model recommendations
  • Benefits of using LMStudio

Key Features Implemented

✅ Automatic LMStudio Detection: Based on URL patterns
✅ Optional API Keys: LMStudio typically doesn't require API keys
✅ Model Listing: Fetch available models from LMStudio
✅ Connection Verification: Test LMStudio server connectivity
✅ Enhanced UI: Clear hints and guidance for LMStudio setup
✅ Backward Compatibility: All existing OpenAI functionality preserved
✅ Error Handling: Specific error messages for different scenarios

How It Works

  1. URL Detection: System automatically detects when LMStudio is being used based on URL patterns
  2. API Key Handling: For LMStudio, API key is optional and system adapts accordingly
  3. Model Fetching: Uses OpenAI-compatible /models endpoint that LMStudio provides
  4. Agent Creation: Creates OpenAI-compatible client that works with LMStudio's API
  5. UI Guidance: Provides clear instructions and examples for users

Supported LMStudio Configurations

  • Default: http://localhost:1234/v1 (no API key required)
  • Custom Port: http://localhost:YOUR_PORT/v1
  • Network Access: http://YOUR_IP:1234/v1
  • With API Key: Any LMStudio setup that requires authentication

Testing Recommendations

  1. Start LMStudio server with a model loaded
  2. Configure ComfyUI-Copilot with LMStudio URL
  3. Test connection using the verify button
  4. Load models and verify they appear in the dropdown
  5. Test chat functionality with a simple query
  6. Test all ComfyUI-Copilot features (workflow generation, debugging, etc.)

Backward Compatibility

All existing OpenAI API configurations continue to work exactly as before. The changes are additive and don't break any existing functionality.

Security Considerations

  • LMStudio runs locally, so all data stays on the user's machine
  • No API keys are transmitted when using LMStudio (unless user specifically sets one)
  • All existing security measures for OpenAI API remain intact
