Simplified IRE Shadow Analysis Outputs

Overview

The IRE shadow analysis has been simplified to provide only the essential outputs needed for practical use, removing unnecessary complexity and reducing the number of output parameters.

Simplified Output Structure

Original Outputs (Unchanged)

  • x_direction - Horizontal light direction
  • y_direction - Vertical light direction
  • combined_direction - Overall light direction
  • hard_soft_index - Light hardness classification
  • x_confidence, y_confidence - Direction confidence values
  • overall_confidence - Overall analysis confidence
  • spread_value - Normal distribution spread
  • debug_mask - Analysis area mask
  • lit_normals_viz - Lit normals visualization
  • cluster_delta_chart - Direction analysis chart
  • x_threshold_preview, y_threshold_preview - Threshold visualizations

IRE Analysis Outputs (Simplified)

  • false_color_ire - IRE false color visualization (masked)
  • shadow_mask - Detected shadow areas
  • soft_shadow_mask - Soft shadow areas only
  • shadow_character - Shadow classification text
  • transition_quality - Transition quality description
  • soft_ratio - Ratio of soft shadows (0.0-1.0)
  • hard_ratio - Ratio of hard shadows (0.0-1.0)

Removed Outputs

The following outputs were removed to simplify the interface:

Removed IRE Visualizations

  • hard_shadow_mask - Redundant with soft_shadow_mask
  • ire_legend - Not essential for analysis

Removed Text Classifications

  • ire_range - IRE value range text
  • shadow_coverage - Shadow coverage description
  • gradient_analysis - Gradient analysis description

Removed Numerical Metrics

  • mean_ire - Average IRE value
  • shadow_percentage - Percentage of shadow pixels
  • mean_gradient - Average gradient magnitude

Removed Combined Analysis

  • final_shadow_character - Combined shadow character
  • final_light_quality - Combined light quality
  • combined_confidence - Combined confidence score
  • analysis_consistency - Analysis consistency metric

Benefits of Simplification

1. Cleaner Interface

  • Reduced from 19 IRE outputs to 7 essential outputs
  • Easier to understand and use
  • Less overwhelming for users

2. Focused Analysis

  • Keeps only the most useful information
  • Removes redundant or overly technical outputs
  • Maintains core functionality

3. Better Performance

  • Fewer calculations and memory usage
  • Faster processing
  • Reduced complexity

Essential Outputs Explained

Visual Outputs

  • false_color_ire: Shows IRE analysis with false colors (masked to analysis area)
  • shadow_mask: Binary mask of all detected shadow areas
  • soft_shadow_mask: Binary mask of soft shadow areas only

Text Classifications

  • shadow_character: "Very Soft", "Soft", "Medium-Hard", "Hard", or "Mixed"
  • transition_quality: "Very Gradual", "Gradual", "Moderate", "Sharp", or "Very Sharp"

Numerical Ratios

  • soft_ratio: Proportion of soft shadows (0.0 = no soft shadows, 1.0 = all soft)
  • hard_ratio: Proportion of hard shadows (0.0 = no hard shadows, 1.0 = all hard)

Usage Examples

Basic Shadow Analysis

# Get essential shadow information
shadow_character = "Soft"  # From shadow_character output
transition_quality = "Gradual"  # From transition_quality output
soft_ratio = 0.75  # 75% soft shadows
hard_ratio = 0.25  # 25% hard shadows

Visual Analysis

# Use visual outputs for analysis
false_color_ire # Shows IRE analysis in false colors
shadow_mask # Shows all shadow areas
soft_shadow_mask # Shows only soft shadow areas

Migration from Full Outputs

If you were using the full output set, here's how to adapt:

For Shadow Classification

  • Before: Used final_shadow_character
  • Now: Use shadow_character

For Light Quality

  • Before: Used final_light_quality
  • Now: Use soft_ratio and hard_ratio values

For Confidence

  • Before: Used combined_confidence
  • Now: Use overall_confidence from original outputs

Conclusion

The simplified output structure provides all the essential information needed for IRE shadow analysis while removing unnecessary complexity. This makes the system more user-friendly and easier to integrate into workflows while maintaining full analytical capability.
