Vito 3ebd5e4166 ci(browser): a hung browser step fails with its running tests named and its traces kept (#425) (#429)
* ci(browser): stop a hung browser run before the job limit and name it

A browser job killed at its 20-minute limit keeps no log and skips its
upload steps (merge-queue run 40723857746, firefox shard 2/2), so nothing
showed which test hung.

- Each browser test step gets timeout-minutes 18, below the job's 20, so
the step fails and the always() uploads still run.
- Under CI, Playwright's globalTimeout stops the run first:
PM_TEST_GLOBAL_TIMEOUT_MINUTES 17 for page workflows, 15 for coverage
workflows, a fixed 3 for the viewer suite. Locally there is no limit
unless the variable is set. Each test keeps the 30 s default.
- running-tests-reporter.mjs prints the tests still running when the run
ends; Playwright's own reporters cannot, since those tests never end.
- A blob report goes to tools/vendor/test-results/blob/, inside the
  uploaded traces path.
- ci-workflow.test.mjs pins globalTimeout < step limit < job limit and the
always() uploads; no existing limit is raised.

Closes #425

* ci(browser): rely on the step limit, report the running tests on SIGTERM

Maintainer ruling on #425: no Playwright globalTimeout. The 18-minute
step limit under the unchanged 20-minute job limit stays, as do the
always() uploads and the CI blob report.

- Drop globalTimeout and PM_TEST_GLOBAL_TIMEOUT_MINUTES with its helper
  and tests.
- A step that reaches its limit gets SIGTERM, which ended Playwright with
no report and no blob. The running-tests reporter now catches the first
SIGTERM, prints the tests still running and sends Playwright its own
SIGINT, so the run ends interrupted and the blob report is written. A
  second SIGTERM kills as usual.
- Test paths are relative to the suite's rootDir instead of the cwd, so
`npm run --prefix` no longer prints ../../ prefixes.
- The workflow comment and TESTING.md say the guarantee assumes an npm
cache hit and that coverage shard 1 is tight in its 18-minute step.

* ci(browser): forward SIGTERM and SIGINT from frontend-coverage.mjs to its child

In the coverage job npm signals only frontend-coverage.mjs. It blocked in
spawnSync with no listener, so Playwright never saw a step timeout. It now
runs each step's child with async spawn, in its own process group, and
forwards SIGTERM and SIGINT to the running child. Step order, exit codes
and the "Command failed (N)" message are unchanged.

Locally, in the pinned image, `timeout -s TERM` on test:coverage printed
the still-running tests and wrote both blob reports. TESTING.md records
that a SIGTERM to npm alone stops at npm's `sh -c`, and that delivery
through `docker exec` in CI is not yet observed.

Refs #425

* ci(browser): load the running-tests reporter by absolute path

A config imported from another directory (the workflow-artifacts test copies
it to a temp root) resolved './running-tests-reporter.mjs' against that root
under CI and failed to load it. Resolve it from this module instead.

Vito 3f085d0724 ci: full matrix once per PR in the merge queue; Windows/macOS non-blocking (#420) (#421)
* ci: run the full matrix once per PR, in the merge queue (#420)

Pull requests now run a fast subset: Python 3.12 on ubuntu-latest, the
coverage gate, black/flake8, frontend modules, bandit and the Chromium/touch
frontend coverage shards plus merge. The merge queue, pushes to main and
manual runs keep the full matrix: Linux/Windows/macOS x Python 3.12-3.14,
real ComfyUI compatibility and the Firefox/WebKit page workflows.

A dropped matrix leg never reports a check, so the new required "all tests"
gate requires every test.yml job to succeed outside pull requests and real
ComfyUI to be skipped only on pull requests; viewerjs does the same for the
browser shards. branch-protection.json drops the eight legs a pull request
no longer runs and adds "all tests".

* docs(ci): ruleset edit keeps every rule and integration id; find merge-queue runs

* ci: move Windows and macOS out of the blocking path (#420)

The maintainer deferred Windows and macOS to the end of the redesign.
The merge queue now runs Linux on Python 3.12-3.14, real ComfyUI, the
frontend coverage shards and the Firefox/WebKit page workflows; pull
requests keep the Linux 3.12 subset. The six Windows/macOS legs move to
the new portability.yml, which runs on push to main, nightly and on
demand, keeps the 27-minute limit and is never a required check. Red
runs there are fixed at their cause before the cutover (#334).

* docs(ci): required checks live in the ruleset and the classic protection (#420)

Vito 0652beba90 ci: run the required workflows for the merge queue (#382)
* ci: run the required workflows for the merge queue

main no longer requires a branch to be up to date before it merges, so a
PR no longer re-runs CI after every other merge. The Tests, Code Quality
and Viewer.js workflows also run on merge_group, so the merge queue can
test each PR against the latest main once, in order. The tracked
protection record now says strict: false.

* test(history): give waits that span a database restore their own ceiling

The merge queue's Windows py3.12 job failed
test_restore_or_generation_rotation_between_transactions_discards_evidence
(restore=True): the restore it waits for, a full verify/migrate/backup/
replace cycle, took over the 10 s BLOCK_SECONDS on a busy runner. The two
waits that span a restore now use RESTORE_SECONDS (90 s), which stays under
the suite's 120 s hang watchdog, so a real hang still fails with its thread
dump. Behavioral waits keep BLOCK_SECONDS.

* test(history): drain the writer before every bounded close or dispose

The merge queue's Windows py3.12 job failed
test_saturated_start_cannot_capture_outputs_or_retain_previous_roots:
dispose(2) ran while the writer still worked through 1,024 queued
commands on a busy runner. Like #370, the test now drains first; the 2 s
bound is not what it tests. Four more closes that follow a released
block get the same drain, so the next slow runner can't fail them one at
a time.

* ci(comfyui): run the real-host job in the pinned Playwright image

The real ComfyUI compatibility job installed Chromium with
`playwright install --with-deps`, which pulls the browser's system
packages from Ubuntu's apt mirror on every run. Three runs (#349 run
40367579020, #378, #382 job 122287230985: "Fetched 19.7 MB in 12min 23s
(26.5 kB/s)") spent 11-12 minutes there and were cancelled at the
24-minute limit after all 89 tests had passed.

The job now runs inside mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:v1.64.1-noble, the
same image as the frontend coverage and page workflow jobs, which ships
Chromium and its libraries, so the job has no apt step at all. The
whole job moves rather than only the browser part: the Playwright
suites launch the managed ComfyUI host themselves (PM_TEST_PYTHON), so
splitting the browser off would mean running the host on the runner and
the browser in a container across a network boundary, a larger change
than moving one job whose host is plain Python and pip wheels.

Python follows the other image jobs: the image's own Python 3.12 with a
user-space venv bootstrapped from a checksum-pinned pip wheel (toolcache
setup-python builds do not run in the container). A step fails the job
when the image Python differs from pythonVersion in
tools/vendor/comfyui-runtime.json, so the pinned host stays honest;
torch, torchvision and ComfyUI's requirements install from the same
pins as before. pip and npm download caches replace setup-python's and
setup-node's.

tests/vendor/browser-image.test.mjs now checks this job like the other
browser jobs: image tag equals @playwright/test in the lockfile, no
browser install or apt, no setup-python/setup-node, checksum-pinned pip,
Node 24, and the runtime Python check. The 24-minute limit is unchanged.

Vito f95f66d76a ci(browser): run page workflows with parallel workers and CI shards (#274)
* test(browser): one test server per Playwright worker

The page workflows started one global webServer and ran with one worker.
Each worker now owns its own tests/browser/server.py on an OS-chosen port,
with its own temp root and database, through a shared `test` in
tests/browser/fixtures.mjs. baseURL, and so page, request and
browser.newContext, point at that worker's server. A server that dies
fails the running test with its stderr tail and the next test gets a
fresh one. The worker count comes from PM_TEST_WORKERS, else 1 under CI,
else a quarter of the CPUs up to 8.

Chromium workflows in the pinned image: 510 tests in 606 s with one
worker on main, 511 (one new isolation spec) in 119 s with eight.

* test(browser): test servers bind an OS-chosen port themselves

tests/browser/server.py accepts --port 0: it binds 127.0.0.1:0 before
building the app, holds that socket for its whole life and prints
PM_TEST_SERVER_PORT=<n> to stdout. startBrowserServer defaults to port 0
and reads the announced port, so no port is reserved and released before
the server binds and two launchers can no longer race for one. The
"address already in use" retry and free-port.mjs are gone; --port N still
works and is checked against the announcement.

* ci(coverage): shard and merge modes for the frontend coverage run

frontend-coverage.mjs now plans its steps from the command line.
No arguments still runs everything, then reports and checks.
--shard I/N runs one slice of the chromium+touch workflows into
coverage/js/raw without wiping it or reporting; shard 1 also runs the
node units and the viewer suite. --merge-only reports and checks over raw
coverage the shards wrote, with --update-baseline as before, and refuses
an empty or missing raw dir. npm scripts: test:coverage:shard and
coverage:merge.

* ci(viewerjs): run browser suites with workers and shards

Frontend coverage runs as three shards (PM_TEST_WORKERS=3 each) that upload
their raw V8 files as coverage-raw-N; a merge job downloads them, fails unless
all three arrived with raw files and no clashing names, then runs
coverage:merge. Firefox and WebKit page workflows run as two shards each with
three workers. The required viewerjs context keeps its name and now needs the
shards, the merge and the browser shards, failing unless every one succeeded.

* ci(viewerjs): cache npm downloads and size timeouts from the first sharded run

The first sharded run lost a webkit shard to its 12-minute limit after all
267 tests passed, and npm ci stalled for 5 minutes in six of eight jobs. Each
npm ci now restores npm's download cache keyed on the vendor lockfile, and
browser job timeouts are the measured times plus at least 50%, never under 20
minutes. The workflow comment records the measurements.

* test(browser): wait for rendering frames, not timers or luck, under load

Two Library workflows failed in CI's webkit shard 2/2 (run 39714840809)
under parallel load:

- "library infinite loading ..." counted cards right after the last
page hid "Load more". That render queues the window update for the
next frame, so a slow frame left the 120 cards of the all-rows
layout in place (received 120, expected < 80). It now waits for the
next frame, which runs after every callback the page queued.
- "row measurement preserves anchor ..." settled with a 60 ms timer. A
scroll event is delivered in a rendering frame, so on a starved
renderer the timer ended before the scroll's frame and no card was in
view (null anchor). settleLibrary now waits for two consecutive
native frames with no Library frame queued, checked inside the frame
  callback.

Before/after: a scratch copy that delays every frame by 120 ms (as a
starved runner) failed the old helpers 19 of 40 runs, at the CI lines,
and passed the new ones 40 of 40 on chromium and webkit. Throttled to
1 CPU with 4 workers, the original spec failed 1 of 42 for each test.

The Tags viewer workflow closed the viewer as soon as its image was
visible, before ViewerJS rendered the title, so CI's coverage never ran
the page's title callback (tags-page.js functions 26/46 = 56.52%, one
function above the floor of 56; locally 27/46). The test now asserts the
title names the shown file, which always runs the callback.

* test(browser): stable under parallel workers

Document how to run the browser suites in parallel and sharded, with the
measured times, and what keeps specs stable beside each other: wait for
a rendering frame, a response or a visible state, never for time.

With b665aa6 the full workflows suite passed on chromium, touch, firefox
and webkit with 8 workers, each test 3 times (6132 passed, 0 failed,
24 minutes), and once at CI size (docker --cpus=4, 3 workers: 2044
passed, 25.5 minutes).

The npm download cache removed the npm ci stall: 0 to 2 s in every job
of run 39722172529, against about 300 s in most jobs before. The
workflow's timing comment now records that run; the whole workflow took
8m54s against about 33 minutes before sharding. Shard imbalance (shard 1
carries the concept-comparison specs) is documented, not tuned.

* test(browser): server stderr on failures, no orphan servers, waits on state

Final review fixes for the per-worker test servers (#274):

- A failed test gets the stderr its server wrote during that test
attached as `server-stderr`, so an aiohttp traceback behind a 500
reaches the CI report. The launcher keeps the newest 256 KB with a
stream position per test (stderrMark/stderrSince), and the fixture
attaches it only when the test did not end as expected.
- The port announcement counts only as a complete line; a chunk ending
mid-number was read as a shorter port.
- server.py --exit-on-stdin-eof shuts down gracefully (database closed,
temp root removed) when stdin closes. The launcher holds that pipe,
so a SIGKILLed worker leaves no server behind, on every OS.
- settled() gives up after 600 frames with the observation stats
instead of hanging to the test timeout.
- The Classic text-sync test waits for the page's 50 ms timer to
install serializeValue instead of sleeping 60 ms. With that timer run
100 ms late (a scratch copy), the old wait failed 20/20 and the poll
  passed 20/20; the spec passed 240/240 at 8 workers x10 and 240/240
at 1 CPU with 4 workers.
- The workflow test checks each npm cache key names its job's pinned
  image tag.

Every new unit test failed before its change (missing export, the old
regex timing out on the split announcement, an unknown server flag, a
hung settle, a mismatched cache key).

* docs(testing): server lifetime, stderr attachments and the final measured CI times

TESTING.md describes the stdin-EOF shutdown and the server-stderr
attachment, states that the npm cache key names the job's image tag
(now tested), quotes run 39725176320 at cbc8a61 (8m38s) and explains the
20-minute browser job limit. The workflow timing comment quotes the same
run.

* fix(browser): server shutdown and its tests on Windows, Python < 3.13 and CI

Three CI failures on ed809f7:

- Windows: server.py exited 1 on stdin EOF because create_app works with
the temp root as its cwd, and Windows cannot remove a process's cwd.
main() now restores the original cwd before the root is removed.
- Python 3.10 to 3.12: the lifetime test's cleanup called communicate()
after closing stdin, which flushes the closed pipe (ValueError); 3.13
tolerates it. It now waits and closes the pipes itself, and the exit
assertion shows the server's stderr. Under 3.12: errors=2 before, OK
  after.
- Tooling (CI container): the SIGKILLed-worker tests treated an exited
server as alive, because the container's PID 1 does not reap orphans
and kill(pid, 0) succeeds on a zombie. Reproduced locally with docker
without --init (2 failed); a zombie now counts as exited (2 passed).

Vito 728db36ac3 ci: fix the frontend coverage timeout and the WebKit Load more race (#262)
* ci: give the frontend coverage job a 40-minute limit with measured headroom

The job runs every page workflow twice (chromium, then touch) on one
worker with V8 coverage, so it takes about twice a single-browser job.
Recent runs took 18m26s-24m57s and PR head 6359999 was cancelled at the
25-minute limit while still passing. Coverage, floors and commands are
unchanged.

* test(images): dispatch the production Load more press so the observer cannot pre-empt it

A pointer click scrolls the continuation row into view, which lets the
page's own infinite-scroll observer append the final batch and hide the
button before the click lands (WebKit, run 39512528039). Dispatch the
press as the concept side already does, after asserting the button is
visible and enabled; the count, card, toast and loading-row assertions
are unchanged.

Vito cbf46a7573 feat(vocabulary): native Tags & categories screen (#245)
* feat(vocabulary): add workspace vocabulary state

* feat(vocabulary): render the native Tags & categories screen

* feat(vocabulary): add guarded vocabulary dialogs

* fix(vocabulary): recover unconfirmed deletes and list every category in Manage

* refactor(vocabulary): use the shared plural helper

* test(vocabulary): compare the native screen with the approved concept

* fix(vocabulary): wrap long tag names so row actions stay visible on narrow screens

* docs(vocabulary): document the native vocabulary screen and gates

Also aligns the shell link focus-ring offset with the concept (3px) and makes
the chrome comparison poll the document title.

* fix(vocabulary): refresh lists when a write lands after its dialog closes

A rename, delete, create or category apply that commits after its dialog
was disposed (Chromium force-closing the modal on a repeated Escape, or
Back while the write is in flight) returned before onInvalidate, so the
lists were never re-read and a cached Library shelf kept showing the old
names. Like the recipe editor, a disposed command now still reports any
outcome that may have changed storage (receipt, conflict, restore,
unconfirmed) without rendering; only a failed write stays silent.

* fix(vocabulary): give the Manage categories datalist its own id

The proposed-name datalist reused the recipe editor's `categories` id. It was safe only because routes dispose each other's dialogs; it is now `vocabulary-category-options`.

* docs(vocabulary): correct vocabulary testing notes

Name the Tag column and the Create tag heading action, say that a failed Load more moves focus to Retry, place bulk actions on the admin page, describe late writes after a closed dialog, Browse's exact filter and the full deviation list, and use a test port that is not the live concept server's.

* test(vocabulary): raise the vocabulary dialog branch floor

coverage:update after the late-write and datalist fixes: workspace/vocabulary-dialog.mjs branches 87 -> 88. No floor is lowered.

* fix(vocabulary): keep 390px row actions visible regardless of font metrics

The one-column Tags table reserved a fixed 6em for the tag name. With
CI's stock DejaVu Sans fallback (about 9% wider than the pinned image's)
Tag + Prompts + Images + stacked actions needed 351px of a 336px wrap,
so Browse and Rename / merge were pushed out of view on every row.

At 700px and below the Tag column now has no fixed minimum and the
actions ask for no more than their stacked width, so all remaining space
goes to the tag name: short names stay on one line wherever the
concept's own table fits, and a wider font wraps the name instead of
clipping an action. A new test widens the metrics with letter spacing
and fails without this change in every engine.

* ci: run browser jobs in the pinned Playwright image

Concept comparisons measure geometry, which follows the fonts a browser
falls back to. The concept names Inter, which neither environment ships:
the pinned image falls back to WenQuanYi Zen Hei, a stock ubuntu-latest
runner to DejaVu Sans. Under DejaVu the concept's own Tags table needs
more than a 390px viewport (its page scrolls sideways and, under touch
emulation, the widened layout viewport resizes its dialogs), so the
390px comparisons failed in CI while passing locally.

Both browser jobs now run in mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:v1.64.1-noble,
the image local runs use, instead of installing browsers on the runner.
A tooling test keeps the tag equal to @playwright/test in the lockfile.

* fix(vocabulary): ignore a category preview edited while it is pending

Editing the Category or proposed name while a slow Preview was in flight
was a no-op in the saving phase, so the late response still became an
applicable preview: the form showed the new values while Apply would
submit the old source and target.

An edit during a pending preview now marks it stale. Its late result
returns the dialog to idle (Preview again) instead of showing an impact
or offering Apply; a plain failure of a stale preview is not shown
either, while a restore or conflict still is, since it describes
storage. The inputs stay editable during the request, as in the recipe
editor, which disables only its actions while saving.

* ci: use the image's Python and Node in containerized browser jobs

Inside mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:v1.64.1-noble, actions/setup-python
failed before any test ran: `spawn /__t/Python/3.12.15/x64/bin/pip
ENOENT`. The toolcache builds come from the runner, and their entry
points name host interpreter paths that do not exist in the container.

The jobs now use the image's Python 3.12 and Node 24. The image has no
ensurepip and the job runs as uid 1001 without root, so a checksum-pinned
pip wheel bootstraps a user-space venv for requirements-dev.txt; a step
checks that the image Node is 24. The tooling test forbids setup-python
and setup-node in these jobs and requires the pinned bootstrap.

Vito b2b817781a ci: cancel superseded PR runs and make the bandit job a real gate (#231)
* ci: cancel superseded PR runs and make the bandit job a real gate

No PR workflow had a concurrency group, so a new push left the previous
run occupying 16 Python matrix runners, the real ComfyUI job and the
three viewerjs jobs for up to 25 minutes. Add a group per workflow and
PR ref that cancels the older run. Pushes to main use the run id as
their group, so no main commit is ever cancelled or dropped as pending.

Remove the lint job from code-quality.yml. It ran black and flake8 a
second time, partly with --exit-zero, next to the protected "black and
flake8" job in test.yml.

The security job ran bandit with "|| true" and could never fail. At
medium severity it reports 74 findings today, so it now gates on high
severity only and prints the medium report without failing. The only
two high findings were SHA1 and MD5 used as a gallery entry id and a
LoRA preview cache filename; mark both usedforsecurity=False, which
leaves every hash value unchanged.

Closes #230.

* ci: verify superseded PR runs are cancelled

* ci: require the bandit high-severity check

Review on #231 pointed out that a failing bandit job did not block a
merge because its context was not required. Name the job
"bandit (high severity)" so the required context is unambiguous, and
add it to .github/branch-protection.json and the TESTING.md list of
required checks.

Vito 2aa39ca1a6 ci: run Firefox and WebKit page workflows in parallel jobs (#229)
* ci: run Firefox and WebKit page workflows in parallel jobs

The viewerjs job ran the Chromium/touch coverage pass and then the
Firefox and WebKit page workflows serially on one runner. The suite
grew from 396 to 496 tests in #227 and the job passed its 25 minute
cap with every test green, which #227 papered over by raising the
budget to 40 minutes.

Split the workflow into a frontend-coverage job, a fail-fast: false
matrix with one runner per browser, and an aggregate viewerjs job that
needs both and fails unless each result is success. The aggregate keeps
the exact "viewerjs" context that branch protection requires, so
.github/branch-protection.json is unchanged. Browser projects, the
single Playwright worker and per-test timeouts are untouched. Coverage
keeps the frontend-test-reports artifact; Firefox and WebKit traces
move to browser-traces-<browser>.

Closes #228.

* ci: keep the frontend coverage job on a 25 minute budget

Merging main carried the 40 minute budget from #227 onto the new
frontend-coverage job. That job no longer runs the Firefox and WebKit
workflows and took 9m31s in run 39178111649 at 396 tests, so the
original 25 minute budget is the right one for all three jobs.

branch timed out without any test failing: run 39173019283 was killed
on test 474 of 496, and run 39175125474 printed "496 passed (12.8m)"
and was then cancelled during Playwright shutdown.

Raise only the job budget. Browser projects, workers and per-test
timeouts are unchanged. Splitting the browsers into parallel jobs is
tracked separately.
