Technical Details

Tensor Format Conversions

ComfyUI → pytorch-bm3d:

# Input: [N, H, W, C] float [0-1]
# Output: [1, C, H, W] int32 [0-255] on CUDA

image_uint8 = (image_float * 255.0).clip(0, 255).astype(np.uint8)
image_torch = torch.from_numpy(image_uint8).permute(2, 0, 1).unsqueeze(0)
image_torch = image_torch.to(torch.int32).to(device).contiguous()  # CRITICAL

pytorch-bm3d → ComfyUI:

# Input: [1, C, H, W] int32 [0-255]
# Output: [H, W, C] float [0-1]

output_np = output_torch.squeeze(0).permute(1, 2, 0).cpu().numpy()
output_np = (output_np.astype(np.float32) / 255.0).clip(0.0, 1.0)

Key Implementation Details

  1. Variance Parameter:

    variance = (sigma * 255)^2  # Not sigma^2!
    # sigma=25 → variance = 625

  2. Contiguous Memory:

    • CRITICAL: Must call .contiguous() before processing
    • pytorch-bm3d's CUDA kernels require contiguous memory layout
    • Permute operations create non-contiguous views
  3. Two-Step Mode:

    • two_step=True equivalent to CPU BM3D 'refilter' profile
    • ~1.5x slower than single-step but higher quality
    • Runs basic denoising → uses result to refine estimate → re-denoise
  4. Batch Processing:

    • pytorch-bm3d processes one image at a time
    • Node handles batches by sequential processing
    • GPU memory cleaned after each image
  5. Graceful Fallback:

    • Checks pytorch-bm3d availability
    • Checks CUDA extension compilation
    • Checks GPU availability
    • Returns original image if processing fails
    • Provides clear error messages

Usage Examples

Example 1: High Quality Denoising

Input: Noisy portrait (1080p)
Node Settings:
  - preset: "medium_noise"
  - use_preset: True
  - two_step: True (from preset)
  - sigma: 25 (from preset)

Result: Clean image in ~0.14 seconds

Example 2: Fast Processing

Input: Batch of 10 images (512x512)
Node Settings:
  - preset: "fast_medium"
  - use_preset: True

Result: ~0.9 seconds total (vs ~25-30s on CPU)

Example 3: Manual Control

Input: Very noisy scan
Node Settings:
  - use_preset: False
  - sigma: 40
  - two_step: True

Result: Custom denoising with manual parameter control

Installation Guide for Users

If the node doesn't appear in ComfyUI, users need to install pytorch-bm3d:

Step 1: Clone Repository

cd ComfyUI/custom_nodes/Eric_Image_Processing_Nodes
git clone https://github.com/lizhihao6/pytorch-bm3d.git

Step 2: Set CUDA_HOME

# Windows (PowerShell)
$env:CUDA_HOME = "C:\Program Files\NVIDIA GPU Computing Toolkit\CUDA\v12.8"

# Linux/Mac
export CUDA_HOME=/usr/local/cuda-12.8

Step 3: Fix Windows Compatibility (Windows only)

Edit pytorch-bm3d/pytorch_bm3d/cuda/stopwatch.hpp:

  • Line 4: Change #ifdef WIN32 → #if defined(_WIN32) || defined(_WIN64) || defined(WIN32)
  • Line 29: Same change
  • Line 45: Same change

Step 4: Remove PNG Dependency (All platforms)

Edit pytorch-bm3d/pytorch_bm3d/setup.py:

  • Line 13: Change libraries=['cufft', 'cudart', 'png'] → libraries=['cufft', 'cudart']

Step 5: Compile CUDA Extension

cd pytorch-bm3d/pytorch_bm3d

# Use ComfyUI's Python (Windows example)
& "path\to\ComfyUI\python_embeded\python.exe" setup.py install

# Linux/Mac
python setup.py install

Step 6: Verify Installation

python -c "import bm3d_cuda; print('Success!')"

Step 7: Restart ComfyUI

The node will appear in: "Eric's Image Processing/GPU Denoisers"

Troubleshooting

Issue: "GPU BM3D is not available"

Check 1: pytorch-bm3d installed?

python -c "from pytorch_bm3d import BM3D; print('OK')"

Check 2: CUDA extension compiled?

python -c "import bm3d_cuda; print('OK')"

Check 3: GPU available?

python -c "import torch; print(torch.cuda.is_available())"

Issue: Compilation fails with "cl compiler not found"

Issue: "input must be contiguous"

  • Cause: Internal issue with tensor memory layout
  • Solution: Already handled in node code with .contiguous() call
  • If still occurring, report as bug

Issue: Node not appearing in menu

  • Restart ComfyUI completely
  • Check console for import errors
  • Verify __init__.py shows "GPU BM3D available" message
