iGavroche 740b347e92 v2.3.22: Sampler attention_backend selector, dead inputs + VAE dtype machinery removed
- ROCmSamplerCustomAdvanced: new attention_backend input (auto/pytorch/
  comfy_kitchen_int8/flash), installed on a clone of guider.model_options
  so the shared ModelPatcher stays clean and sparse-attention overrides
  still chain on top
- Removed dead inputs: precision_mode, batch_optimization, flash_attention,
  test_steps; fix_empty_latent_channels now passes downscale ratios like
  stock; disable_pbar actually forwarded
- ROCmVAEDecode: deleted unreachable VAE re-dtype machinery (first_stage_model
  .dtype is None for every shipped VAE); decode follows vae.vae_dtype and
  never mutates shared weights; fp16 accumulation now goes through
  apply_rocm_backend_settings (rdna3_5 pre-7.14 guard respected), same fix
  in ROCmGGUFLoader which also stopped forcing allow_tf32=False
- Deleted ROCmSamplerCustomAdvancedBenchmark node (ROCmFluxBenchmark remains)
- batch_cap field + *_BATCH_CAP constants, select_precision, dead tail of
  apply_rocm_backend_settings removed
- conftest stubs extended (comfy.audio, model_patcher, ldm attention,
  folder_paths, interrupt hook): 184 passed, 24 skipped, 0 failed
- Docs: node docs, README, Benchmarks, ARCHITECTURE refreshed to current
  stack (ROCm 7.16 / torch 2.15.0a0+rocm10.1.0)

Architecture-Specific Optimizations

gfx1151 Optimizations

  • Preferred Precision: fp16 (preferred_precision reported by ROCmVAEPerformanceMonitor / ROCmSamplerPerformanceMonitor)
  • Optimal Tile Sizes: 768-1024 for most workloads (tile_size_max 2048)
  • Temporal tiling: temporal_chunk_size capped to 8 to avoid HIP allocator fragmentation in the unified pool
  • fp16 matmul accumulation: enabled only on ROCm ≥ 7.14; on older ROCm it caused numerical drift and hipErrorIllegalAddress on bf16 flow-matching models
  • TF32: left at the ROCm default; forcing it off caused a ~2x slowdown on LTX 2.3

Attention backends

ROCmSamplerCustomAdvanced.attention_backend selects the dense attention implementation per sampling call. Measured on gfx1151 with real DiT shapes (bf16):

shape (seq len) PyTorch SDPA comfy_kitchen_int8 flash
flux 1024 (4608) 12.60 ms 12.09 ms · 1.04x 10.26 ms · 1.23x
qwen-image (8704) 45.87 ms 42.09 ms · 1.09x 45.24 ms · 1.01x
wan 480p (16384) 277.90 ms 237.97 ms · 1.17x 264.57 ms · 1.05x
ltx 720p (32768) 726.07 ms 685.49 ms · 1.06x 924.39 ms · 0.79x
cross-attn (1024, hd=64) 0.31 ms 0.43 ms · 0.72x 0.43 ms · 0.73x

No backend wins everywhere: INT8 helps long self-attention and loses on short cross-attention, and flash regresses badly at 32k tokens. End-to-end on flux-2-klein-4b-fp8 at 1024² (seq 4096, 6 steps, order-rotated, median of 3) the backends land within 6% of each other — auto 57.99 s, pytorch 55.66 s, comfy_kitchen_int8 55.42 s, flash 54.94 s — which is the same size as the run-to-run spread (up to 9%), so attention is not the bottleneck at that shape. Treat the selector as a per-model tuning knob, not a default change.

Performance Monitoring

ROCmVAEPerformanceMonitor and ROCmSamplerPerformanceMonitor are analysis-only: they return DEVICE_INFO, PERFORMANCE_TIPS and OPTIMAL_SETTINGS text blocks derived from the live VAE/model and detect_architecture(). They keep no counters between executions. For measured timings use ROCmFluxBenchmark.

Usage Recommendations

Optimal Settings for gfx1151

# ROCmVAEDecode
{
    "tile_size": 768,                   # Optimal for gfx1151
    "overlap": 96,                      # Optimal overlap
    "use_rocm_optimizations": True,
    "temporal_chunk_size": 8,           # Capped to 8 on rdna3_5

Decode dtype is always the VAE's own vae_dtype; there is no precision input to choose.
