# OpenAI (DALL-E 3) API Setup Guide

|
## Getting the OpenAI API Key
|
|
1. **Sign Up for OpenAI**: Visit the [OpenAI website](https://openai.com/) and create an account or log in.
|
|
2. **API Key Generation**: Navigate to the API section and generate a new API key. Make sure to note it down securely.
|
|
|
|
## Setting the API Key as an Environment Variable
|
|
### For Windows (Command Prompt):
|
|
1. Open Command Prompt.
|
|
2. Type `setx OPENAI_API_KEY "Your-API-Key"` and press Enter.
|
|
|
|
### For Windows (Using System Properties):
|
|
1. Right-click on 'This PC' or 'My Computer' on your desktop or in File Explorer.
|
|
2. Select 'Properties'.
|
|
3. Click on 'Advanced system settings'.
|
|
4. In the System Properties window, go to the 'Advanced' tab and click 'Environment Variables'.
|
|
5. Under 'System variables', click 'New'.
|
|
6. For 'Variable name', enter `OPENAI_API_KEY`.
|
|
7. For 'Variable value', enter your actual API key.
|
|
8. Click 'OK' to close each window.
|
|
|
|
### For Unix/Linux/Mac:
|
|
1. Open Terminal.
|
|
2. Add `export OPENAI_API_KEY="Your-API-Key"` to your shell profile file (like `.bashrc` or `.zshrc`).
|
|
3. Reload your profile with `source ~/.bashrc` or `source ~/.zshrc`.
|
|
4. Verify the variable by running `echo $OPENAI_API_KEY`.
